Hike in Jenner Headlands Preserve
Sonoma County, California - May 1, 2026
4.5 Miles, 1,000 Ft Climb
Plus Shell Beach and Spud Point Crab Company
Reenie and Bob

After hiking in the Jenner Preserve we decided to visit Shell Beach, then head on down to the Spud Point Crab Company at Bodega Bay. When we arrived at the Shell Beach parking lot, we saw a wedding ceremony was just finished taking place at the entrance to the trail leading down to the beach. They politely moved aside to let us by and down we went. We were hurrying because we wanted to have time to visit the Crab Company before going home. All worked out well. We picked up stones on the beach. We also saw, as shown below, Velella Velella (By-the-Wind Sailors): These are not true shells but are colonial hydroids (related to jellyfish) that wash up in massive blue blooms. They lose their blue color and turn white as they dry. After the beach we drove to Bodega Bay and, surprisingly for a Friday afternoon, there was no line at the Crab Company.
