Hike To Merganser Pond in Hood Mountain Regional Park
Sonoma County, California - February 4, 2026

It was a beautiful day to hike in the Hood Mountain Regional Park in Santa Rosa - highs in the 60's, blue skies, almost no one else I saw hiking. The photo above is of Mergensar Pond. The photos below show views from the trail as I hiked up, including the house I looked down upon at the top of Pythian Road - 1951 Pythian Rd. (According to Zillow, 2 beds, 1 bath, 990 sq ft, $776,500 on Feb 5, 2026).

The first photo below shows the only two people I saw the entire hike. If you click on the photo and zoom in you will see a fisherman at the edge of the lake and directly above him behind the tree branches another hiker. Both of them soon left while I picnicked, the hiker briefly sitting at a picnic table near me. The last photo confirms I hiked a 4 mile roundtrip from the Pythian Trailhead to the Merganser Pond. Elevation climb was 400' (parking lot 800', pond 1200') A glorious day!
