Hike From Trailhead for Freezeout Flat Road to Islands In The Sky
Sonoma County, California - January 8, 2025
~4 Miles, 925' Elevation Gain
Reenie and Bob

We drove to Duncans Mills where we crossed the Moscow Rd bridge to get to Freezeout Rd, noticing a portable outhouse just sitting beside the road, then driving to our private parking spot just in front of the gate into the park (sign on the gate said either "No Parking" or "Parking Reserved for Bob and Reenie"). It was a beautiful day for our hike, slightly cool as we started up the hill, warmer as we came back down. The start of the hike goes along a cow pasture (as second pic shows, actual cows far up the hill on the other side of the pasture).

As we started up the road, which was quite steep, we noticed what an abundance of ferns there were.

Although there had not been a recent rain, the streams were flowing well. It was so nice to hear them as we hiked.

We reached the top of our climb, which was very nice to do, and could see in the distance the Pacific Ocean and other trails we had taken in the past.

We had a very nice lunch in the woods including sandwiches and chocolate (thank you Reenie! says Bob). While eating we heard a bird that sounded almost, but not quite, like an owl. We then headed back, again getting a view of the Pacific ocean. Going downhill is so much easier than uphill! Although Bob, not paying enough attention, did trip and fall. But, as a professional faller, Bob knew how to softly land and roll, impressing Reenie with his skills. No harm done. And no picture or video taken.

We made it all they way down and so got to see the cows again. As usual, Bob talked to one of the cows near the trail, but the cow paid no attention, just kept eating the grass. Rude.

We got back to the car, changed from boots to shoes, and headed home, driving along the coast and making a stop to capture the beauty of the ocean. Here's a : video

Bob insisted on going to Bodega Bay and buying 3 crab sandwiches for dinner. Reenie got a cup of clam chowder. After putting these in the car, we drove home. A wonderful adventure indeed.
