The following letter was written by Bob to his Grandmother from Freiburg, Germany. The date is based on a postmarked envelope and the order letters were written.

The letter below includes some interesting points:

Text of letter:

Dear Grandma,

I have received all of your letters and the enclosed money, which I of course appreciate. Actually, I would be as interested in your letters whether or not you enclosed the money & it seems like $10 is a hell of a lot to pay to send a letter.

I am just at the end of a two week vacation from work. In early October or late Sept I will quit work completely & travel around Europe until I run out of money. Then I will work again. Next April I return to the U.S. & Berkeley, where I will begin working towards a PhD in math.

I just got back from hitch hiking to Zurick. A girl I knew in Berkeley was traveling through Ger. & stopped by here, so we decided to travel to Zurick together, since I have nothing else to do. I got a fabulous deal on a pair of good Swiss boots. We also visited a couple of interesting museums & an old cathedral.

Do you know where my two post cards of the Swiss peak I climbed ended up? I forgot who I sent that letter to & I assume it went the rounds & I'd like the cards back so I can show them to some friends.

Also, what is Betty's address in Rockport? It must be sort of eerie to be all alone in a house with only cats. I hope you weren't too lonely.

Love,

Bob
