Johnson County voters defeated a $75 million dollar bond issue which would have constructed 24 soccer
fields, a recreation center, and other associated features in south Overland Park. The final vote was 64.20%
(116,496) opposed to 35.80% (64,960) in favor.
Opponents of the issue questioned the cost and location
of the fields and the lack of transparency in the process. Proponents heavily outspent their critics
with estimates of well over $500,000 being spent in support of the soccer fields.
Johnson County Park & Rec should work with citizens to come up with a new proposal that focuses on just soccer fields for the kids. The new proposal should not be tied to a Wizards stadium and retail nor should it be on land planned for residential.
