Corps of Engineers Denies Home Depot Permit
Located In Jackson County Near Little Blue River Tributary

March 15, 2002

The Corps of Engineers has denied a permit to Home Depot in Jackson County. I have no detail on it other than what is posted on the Corp website. What caught my attention, however, was that this flowed into Blue River and was denied under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. There are three development proposals now being considered along Metcalf between 143rd Street and 167th street, all of which have water flowing into the Blue River.

  • Wal-Mart at 159th and Metcalf, already has a preliminary determination that it requires an Individual Permit. A stream from Wal-Mart flows into Negro Creek and then into Blue River. Wal-Mart has not yet turned in its formal application to the Corps.

  • The most recent development proposal, on the SE Corner of 159th and Metcalf, also shows a pond and drainage eventually flowing into the Blue River. In this image, the parcels are located to the upper left at the SE Corner of 159th and Metcalf.

  • A third development, near 148th and Metcalf, drains into Negro Creek and then into the Blue River, just as does Wal-Mart.
