Shoddy Home Building and Business Practices
Fox 4 News and Nancy Seats Of HADD Expose Miller Enterprises

January 31, 2002

I have just finished watching Fox 4 News at both 9pm and 10pm. It ran an excellent story exposing the shoddy building practices of one builder, Miller Enterprises, who is active in both Missouri and Kansas in the Kansas City Metro area. When I heard that Fox 4 was going to broadcast this story, I immediately called Nancy Seats, a driving force behind Homeowners Against Deficient Dwelling (HADD).

Nancy has been at the center of investigating, reporting, and bringing to justice this builder. It has taken years. When Nancy first complained to the Missouri Attorney General about Miller's practices and how many were affected, she was told there just wasn't enough documentation. So she got the homeowners to provide that documentation and turned it over to the Attorney General. Faced with the overwhelming evidence of poor construction and refusal to respond to complaints, the AG brought suit. HADD has published correspondence from home owners with such experience with Miller Enterprises.

At one point, Nancy Seats herself was threatened with a lawsuit in a letter from Miller's attorney if she did not immediately cease and desist her activities. Nancy's lawyer wrote back that she would continue to exercise her freedom of speech rights guaranteed under the United States Constitution. That put an end to that particular tactic, and Nancy continued her fight.

Miller Enterprises was required by the State of Missouri to correct the problems it had caused. As Fox 4 News reported tonight, Miller's attorney said all of the corrections were either completed or nearing completion. As Fox 4 News also reported after investigating this claim, this statement was contradicted by most of the homeowners Fox 4 was able to contact. It should be noted that in Fox 4 News' story tonight Miller labeled the homeowners a few "bad apples" and insisted Fox 4 News interview ones who liked their homes. That was the amusing part of the reporting. One of the selected, "good apples" I guess, also complained about Miller's construction and refusal to fix a problem.

If you have any problems with shoddy home construction, whether from this builder or another, and want some help, HADD and Nancy Seats at NSeats@aol.com in particular are excellent starting points.

Three cheers for Nancy for carrying this fight on for so many years and 3 cheers for Fox 4 News for doing such an excellent report on the subject.
