I interviewed Richard Bode of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), along with staff members, about the emissions from the Metcalf Autobody Paint Shop. Richard is Manager of their Emission Inventory Methods Section. I will publish more complete notes from that interview later. However, one of the points he most emphasized was the potential danger of several heavy metals, particularly:
The ingredients of the pigments used at Metcalf Autobody are proprietary, but Richard suggested I simply ask the Johnson County Environmental Department (JCED) whether any of these metals were used in the pigments. This would avoid the issue of identifying specific ingredients or formulas.
I asked Mike Boothe of the (JCED) whether one could say that none of the toxic metals listed by the CARB were among the proprietary ingredients.
The following is Mike's reply. Mike has also been pursuing a follow-up study of volatile (non-particulate) emissions by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE):
"Bob-- I received your message and we've talked w/ the paint manufacturer's (Spies-Hecker) office in NY. There are some of the metals you mentioned present in the paints. We are not certain of the type of form of these chemicals, which is important. Spies Hecker is going to provide this information to us, although it may take a little time, since they are manufactured in Germany. We are also doing this by e-mail since it is much faster.
I am also awaiting some information from KDHE which I will forward to you as soon as possible.
Please call if you have any questions.
