NeighborhoodNet Closes

February 14, 1999

Folks,

After almost 3 years of publishing NeighborhoodNet, I have decided to stop. I have had a wonderful time. The best part, far and away, was meeting all the people who contacted me over the Internet. As it turns out, it was through e-mail that my wife Shirley and I met a couple who live only a couple of blocks from us and who have become our very good friends [Hi Wendy and Jim!]. Several times someone has e-mailed me about a subject that I know was of interest to someone else and I was able to put them in contact. That too has been great.

The reason for my decision is straightforward. It takes 20 or more hours per week to publish NeighborhoodNet. I have found that I do not have the discipline to cut back - I want things "just so" and I'll spend hours getting it that way. It reminds me of the adage about word processing replacing typewriters: No time is saved, you just get a lot more editting.

I am going to leave the link to the NeighborhoodNet website on-line for a while. It contains quite a bit of information that may be of use. At some point I will take it down.

Thank you to all of you who helped me out so much to make NeighborhoodNet successful and fun. Whether you are neighbors and readers, friends who have helped me through technical difficulties, reporters, or government officials, you have all been very generous in giving me assistance.

Sincerely,
Bob
